Enhancing Visitor Experiences Forum, Kalgoorlie

Well, it’s been a busy few weeks since I last blogged.

I have now got a job working at the Goldfields Oasis, the amazing recreation centre here in Kalgoorlie, as their new membership and marketing coordinator. I thought finding a marketing job here would be hard, but it seems like fate stepping in and I luckily got the job just three weeks after we got here!

I’m loving it so far, everyone is so nice and the centre has a fantastic atmosphere. I’m learning so much and really being able to put my stamp on things here as it’s a brand new role. I’m very lucky and really excited about what’s to come.

In addition, I have been asked to speak at the Enhancing Visitor Experiences (EVE) Forum on Wednesday 23 April at the Hannans Club in Kalgoorlie. I’ll be doing the social media presentation and explaining how it can have a big impact on the tourism industry. I’ll be doing this alongside some of the best creative professionals from across Western Australia including Claire Savage, owner of Savagely Creative and Dee Smith from EVE.

I’m really excited as I used to do workshops and seminars quite regularly when I was with Wolfstar, but it will be my first time in Australia! I’m currently researching some Australian examples to bring my presentation to life and finding some really great stuff.

Fingers crossed it will go well and everyone will find the presentation helpful and interesting! Watch this space!

Adventures down under

So, today’s my last day at Wolfstar! I can’t believe it’s been two years. I’ve learnt so much and met some amazing people here, so am sad to be leaving.

However, I’m so excited about the new chapter in my life. As of January, I’ll be moving to Australia with my other half! All very scary but can’t wait for a new adventure.

Hopefully I’ll pick up some freelance work and continue my career in PR. My blogs and tweets may become more “girlfriend of a geologist living in a mining town” focused, but I’ll try to keep my finger on the PR pulse.

I’m sure we’ll fit in over there - my love of a good BBQ, drinking and sunshine should help, aswell as my penchant for massively stereotyping countries! ;)

CIPR Awards 2009

Well it’s award time again and here at Wolfstar we’ve just heard we’ve been nominated in three categories in the CIPR PRide Awards; Outstanding Consultancy, Best use of social media and Outstanding Young Communicator of the Year – that’s me! I’m so flattered to have been shortlisted, I’m not sure who else is up but sure they’ll be tough competition. It’s exciting to be nominated and I can’t wait for the awards!

We went to the awards last year and had a really good time, good excuse for the team to get together, have a few drinks and let our hair down (although we don’t really need that good an excuse.. see the evidence of Jed Hallam last year. Still my favourite photo of 2008.)

So, good luck to all the other shortlisted agencies and people – look forward to seeing you all there.

My day out with the mummy bloggers

As part of my work for Wolfstar, we handle the social media for buggy manufacturer, Silver Cross. I really enjoy working on this account. Silver Cross is a great brand, that has proven it can retain its traditional and heritage roots, but update its product range and bring itself bang up to date - without compromising its identity.

Last week, we organised a special blogger meet-up for a selection of mummy bloggers at the Rainforest Cafe in London.

It was a little stressful trying to organise about 27 adults and 18 children in quite a small space with intermittent thunderstorms, but once we were all in it was really enjoyable.

It was lovely to meet all of the mums I’ve been working with so closely over the past few weeks - and obviously their adorable children!

To name just a few, I had chance to chat to and get to know Alpha MummyWahm-Bam,NixdMinxNoble SavagePotty MummyMaternal TalesAnd One More Means Four,BoozleboxHome Office MumDiary of a Surprised MumBeing a MummyDaddacoolNotes From Inside My HeadThames Valley MumsPart Mummy Part MeMetropolitan Mum,Perfectly Happy MumLondon-Baby and the lovely Susanna who I’ve met a couple of times before too.

Thanks for a great day and I hope we can do it again soon!

It’s nice working for an outstanding small consultancy…

Excuse the blatant self-promotion, but this week Wolfstar, the consultancy where I work, has been named the national Outstanding Small Agency of the Year by the CIPR. We won the gold award at the regional heats back in November, and we’ve now won the national award.

This is great news and I’m really proud to be part of the team. Hopefully this is only the start and we’ll go on to even bigger and better things in the future. I’ve been working at Wolfstar for just over two months, so I’m still relatively new, but definitely feel like part of the team!

I recently accompanied Stuart to the Don’t Panic Guide to Social Media conference in Manchester - I should have blogged about it sooner but things have been very hectic running up to Christmas.

The conference was great and I really enjoyed hearing about social media being used so diversely, by everyone from councils and police forces, to consumer agencies and big brands like Microsoft. It was good to see examples of social media in practice. As I’m quite new to this area of PR, a lot of what I learn is from books, the internet, my colleagues and existing blog posts. The speakers at the conference really put social media into context and inspired me about how it can be used in a unique and impactful way.

As I now know is good blogger practice, I’d better big a few people up…. Speakers who stood out for me were Tom Murphy from Microsoft, Stephen Davies at 3W PR, Meg Pickard from the guardian.co.uk, Mark Payne from West Midland Police and Marshall Manson from Edelman. All very different, but all entertaining and extremely informative!

Anyway, that’s all for now. It’s our work Christmas party tomorrow (double celebrations after picking up the award) so I may have some interesting tid bits to blog about in early 2009!

Happy Christmas!
