Global social media - your mum joining Facebook and your Nana on Skype

Although I’ve been working in social media for more than two years, I’ve experienced it in a totally new way over the past four weeks.

Previously, it was all about creating social media campaigns for clients - from public sector community projects to global campaigns for big brands. However, once I moved to the other side of the world, I realised just how much social media can be your lifeline back to friends and family.

Facebook has stopped being a way to simply read people’s status updates and pass some time, but is now a window into what my friend’s are up to. I find myself commenting a lot more and being genuinely interested in what’s going on back home. When my mum joined Facebook yesterday to look at some of our pictures, I knew it had taken on a whole new meaning.

We got a Flip camera for Christmas and have since made  a couple of videos of Kalgoorlie. The video on our You Tube channel received 90 hits in just two weeks! Now I’m sure my family are responsible for more than half of these, but still, it just goes to show how much the connection means to people at home too.

Skype takes the phone call to another level. Just being able to see someone’s face when you talk to them makes all the difference. It’s not quite the cuddle I’d like, but it’s close. Plus, seeing my Nana and Grandad trying to figure out the webcam and how to use Skype is comedy gold!

I always knew the importance of social media to brands, but am only just realising it’s true importance to me.

Fashion and social media – G-Star Raw Reporters

Gstar

I stumbled across this site for G-Star, a Dutch clothing company, today and loved their new campaign.

The G-Star Raw Reporters campaign is using social media to recruit fashion reporters to attend their catwalk show during New York Fashion Week. People can demonstrate their creativity and passion for fashion via four different channels, Twitter, Facebook, You Tube and Flickr.

Utilising all four tools not only broadens the scope, but also allows consumers to communicate in a way they feel comfortable and confident.

The Raw Reporters will get front row tickets to the show, go back stage at the event and attend the after-show party. There will be winners from each category, so the Facebook winner will be updating via the social networking site, the Flickr winner will be taking loads of photos, the Twitter winner will be Tweeting live updates and the You Tube winner will be making short video clips for their channel.

Not only does this campaign create buzz in the run up to the event, but also during the show as people will be following (in one way or another) live. Plus, once the show is over G-Star has loads of user-generated content for their site. This is shareable and also much more accessible to consumers.

They’re much more likely to read something, and then buy something, from someone like them rather than a corporate website.

I think this is a great campaign and a great use of social media. I’ll be entering now to try and bag my place in New York!

Interactive Easter egg hunt

I stumbled across this video on You Tube today and think it’s quite a cool idea! From what I can tell, this is just something someone’s created at home for a bit of fun. It has had over 200,000 views though! It’s a simple but fun use of social media – even though the girl is slightly irritating (sorry)!

It got me thinking about ways in which brands could utilise this kind of thing. Maybe they could do a similar thing but use an even more interactive medium like Kyte to allow people to ask questions and choose where to look in real time.

Has this been done before by any brands? Be interesting to see how it worked!
